Tip: After a major storm, walk around your property (safely) and check for shingles in your yard or near your gutters.
2. Check for Granules in Your Gutters
Hail and heavy rain can knock protective granules off asphalt shingles. If your gutters or downspouts contain piles of black or gray grit, that means your shingles are losing their protective coating. Once granules are gone, UV rays can accelerate roof deterioration.
Tip: Inspect gutters and driveway runoff the day after a storm for loose granules.
3. Watch for Water Stains Inside
Storm damage doesn’t always start outside. Water stains on ceilings, walls, or attic boards often mean there’s a roof leak. Even a tiny puncture in flashing or vent seals can allow water to seep through.
Tip: Check your attic with a flashlight during or right after heavy rain for dark spots or damp insulation.
4. Look for Dented Gutters, Vents, or Flashing
If metal components like gutters or roof vents are dented, there’s a good chance your shingles took hits too. Hail often damages both at the same time. These dents can break the roof’s waterproof barrier and shorten its lifespan.
Tip: Take photos of all visible hail or wind damage. They’re useful for insurance claims.
